“For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 5:20)
Isn’t it interesting how God offers His love freely and people reject it? He loved you so much that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). It’s so simple, so why is it so difficult to accept? Religious thinking! You see, religion is about a thousand feet long and about five inches deep (it’s shallow and certainly not of God!).
Jesus had the hardest time with religious people. It was the scribes and Pharisees (the religious teachers of that day) who listened to His teachings, saw Him perform miracle after miracle, watched Him heal the sick and raise the dead, and still chose to persecute and execute Him. Jesus came and died on a cross not to give us religion, but to give us freedom and liberty.
Through His death, burial, and resurrection, He showed the perfect, absolute, and unconditional love of God. When Jesus died, the veil in the temple—which illustrated religious ceremonies and traditions—was torn in half. These were no longer acceptable to God; He replaced them with a new and lasting promise of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ. We are now no longer bound to the law of religion, but are saved by believing in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Dear Lord, maybe it’s time to stop struggling and hoping we will eventually enter into God’s kingdom. Today let us make the decision to be guided and powered by the Spirit of God. May we remember, no religion can save us, but Jesus can!
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
On this day, remember a Savior was sent to seek and to save what was lost … us!
