Word 4 Today December 8, 2011

When my daughter first learned to ride a bike, I was afraid that she might fall and get hurt, but at the same time I was thrilled.  I knew how excited she and I would be when she rode down the street for the first time.  Now she has a driver’s license, and if you think I was nervous about the bike, well, think again.  As scary as teaching her to drive was, it was even more exciting seeing her become more independent.

This year I will turn sixty-three, and although I may be a little concerned about health, retirement, changes in the cost of living, and many other issues that might come up, I know growing older will bring new challenges.  However, based on past experiences, I will not let those challenges discourage me from enjoying the excitement that will surely accompany my old age.  I encourage all of you, even when you feel afraid, to step out and get involved in the lives of your loved ones, as well as your community.  Please never stop dreaming and aspiring to be better.  The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Ps. 27:1).

Dear Lord, let every new challenge serve as an opportunity for better mental, physical, and spiritual health.  Maybe it’s time to do things just a little bit differently, a time to celebrate more and complain less.  To make new friends, and frankly, get rid of those who bring you down.

Be willing to risk, for without risk, there is no reward.
