Word 4 Today November 12, 2011

Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.  And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’  So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there will I store all my crops and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.’  But God said to him, ‘Fool!  This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’  So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God” (Luke 12:16–21).

This rich man had everything he wanted, or so he thought.  Unfortunately God had other plans.  We must learn to keep our priorities straight and remember to put God first in all we do.

Dear Lord, when will we learn that our dependency must be on You?  The best-laid plans we might have can never outdo the plans You have for us.  We may think we’re smart and have everything all figured out—when all of a sudden the rug is pulled from under us.  Today let us put our faith and trust in You, not in acquiring material excess that will only lead to a hollow heart.

It’s never “my will be done, not thine,” but always “thy will be done, not mine”!
