Word 4 Today May 19, 2011

A friend e-mailed us with a nightmare that in his words was, “The worst of the worst” I won’t go into the detail of the dream as it is rather long but his final statement was, “This is by far the most terrifying dream I had ever had, and I have a terrible feeling that they are going to get worse.”  “Do you think I am being challenged by the devil or tested by God?  I’m really confused about all this…but I do know for certain that tonight, I’m sleeping with the lights on.”  I wonder if he tried hiding under the bed? No, I’ve watched too many scary movies to know that doesn’t work.  My first response was “Wow!  After that story, I would have no problem with you sleeping with the lights on.”

O.K. All kidding aside, Acts 2:21 came to mind; whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be savedThe first thing I suggested was, when you’re frightened merely say “Jesus help me.” He’s there, remember Hebrews 13:5 I will never leave you or forsake you.”  In prayer ask Him to protect your mind against evil thoughts.  Start telling God how good He is and thank Him for the many blessings you have received today.  Know that the Holy Spirit lives inside of you and protects you from evil while you sleep.

Then I offered some practical advice.  Go ahead and leave a night light on, remind yourself that Jesus is the light of the world.  Try to get to bed at the same time every night; it will become a habit you look forward to.  Watch what you eat for dinner, and don’t eat a big meal before bed.  Have a small snack and a glass of milk before going to bed and stop watching violent shows or the news, playing violent video games or doing anything else that’s not going to put peace in your heart and mind.  No surprise, he responded several days later with, “Alex, you will be happy to know that I am sleeping better now.  I took your advice and it helped.”

Lord, I must learn that not only are you with me when I am awake, but also when I fall asleep.  May I rest comfortably in Your arms knowing You are always with me.

The best advice I can give in any situation is to ask God and let Him give you an answer of peace.
